Dmitry Matheny showcases Jazz Noir at California Jazz Conservatory
JAZZ NOIR. This Saturday, April 9 at 8 p.m., jazz aficionados are in for a treat as an all-star jazz party is slated at the intimate California Jazz Conservatory celebrating the international release of Jazz Noir, Dmitry Matheny’s eleventh album.
No stranger to the Bay Area, Matheny has been collecting critical praise for years. The acclaimed musician and bandleader is known for his warm tone, soulful emotion, and masterful technique. An honors graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Matheny leaped onto the jazz scene in the 90s as the protégé of jazz legend Art Farmer. Since then he has also garnered a loyal international following as he’s toured extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Asia, among others.
His quintet features Dave Ellis on tenor saxophone, Matt Clark on piano, Doug Miller on bass, Leon Joyce Jr. on drums, and Matheny on flugelhorn. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $15. MOVIES AND WINE. Here’s a great bargain: Orinda Theatre Square sponsors a monthly free movie night at the Orinda Theatre in Orinda the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. Next up is Die Hard starring Bruce Willis on Thursday, April 14, followed by the Wizard of Oz May 12, Mash June 9, and Stand By Me July 14. The past January, the fine operators of the Orinda and Rheem Theatres, Derek Zemrak and Larry Pirkle, also added a feature of another kind with the opening of the charming Cine Cuvee, right next door to the theatre in the former Kasper’s Hot Dog location. An intimate wine bar with the wonderful movie accents, the addition to the Orinda night life scene (yes, night life scene!) is terrific! CALLING HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS. Once again, producer Jo Schuman Silver, The Steve Silver Foundation and Beach Blanket Babylon announce the Steve Silver Foundation and BBB “Scholarship for the Arts” program. Conceived in 2002 as part of its commitment to the arts, the program has grown into an annual event anticipated by Bay Area high school seniors.
“Steve Silver was dedicated to encouraging and inspiring young artists to follow their dreams,” said Schuman Silver. “Over the years, we have seen the ways the scholarship money has helped students make those dreams a reality. I am thrilled to announce that this year we will be raising each of the three scholarships from $10,000 to $15,000.”
Here’s the scoop: High school seniors throughout the SF Bay Area are asked to submit a completed entry form along with a three-minute performance in one of three categories – singing, acting or dancing. Nine finalists (three from each category) will be selected by a panel of performing arts professionals and notified on Monday, May 9, 2016.
Winners will perform their three-minute piece live at BBB’s home, Club Fugazi in San Francisco, on June 6 in front of a panel of celebrity judges and an invited audience of family and friends. One winner from each category will be presented the $15,000 check toward their higher education. “Scholarship for the Arts” is based entirely on talent. Grades and financial need are not factors.
